Notes: Lychee fruit, milk, vanilla, jasmine grandiflorum, salt
This is, in my opinion the most classically feminine scent that I have released to date. It is a delicious , bright and creamy fruity-floral with a strong lactonic undercurrent. For me it is the scent of withdrawal, healing, and finding yourself at the bottom of a lychee martini.
My experiment to make a modern fleurmande chypre. This feels quite feminine to me and has opposing elements of brightness and grounded sweets.
Notes: tonka bean, lilac, vanilla absolute, green cardamom, cashmere cardigans, white chocolate, and plumeria over a modernized chypre base.
Streaks of light piercing through the curtains on a quiet Saturday morning. You know that when you get out of bed the house will be just a bit too cold. You haven’t turned the heat on yet this season. You bide your time. Hit the snooze button, and wait for the sun’s warmth to do it’s work.
The vibe is a twilight stroll through a garden, thick with sprawling green fig trees and lilac. There are ancient-looking marble busts and statues dotting the property in various levels of decay. The air is thick, sweet, and somewhat humid. You come to a life-sized classical nude, posed pouring water from a vase in to the earth below. Covering their nakedness, someone before you has stuck a fig leaf to their pelvis with a bit of the plant's natural latex.
Notes: Fig leaf, ripening fig, marble, laurel wreaths, purple lilac, ivy, green mandarin, and creeping thyme
This fragrance was inspired by the fig leaf campaign of Pope Paul IV in which it was decided that nudity in art was not morally acceptable. Famously this resulted in many statues, particularly male nudes having their genitals covered with plaster fig leaves and/or being chiseled off entirely.
In an interesting twist, the Vatican kept most of the removed phalluses and there is now a team of scholars in Italy that are working to match the stray wieners with their original owners, thereby restoring art that was vandalized by the church in the name of Christian propriety.
Sitting alone in a dark cafe, near the window. It’s raining outside but you are still warm and dry. You are reading a novel and enjoying a cup of chamomile tea while the smell of oatmeal cookies slowly grows. You realize a fresh batch has just come out of the oven.
Notes: Roman chamomile, oatmeal cookies, tuberose, orris butter, weathered woods, brown sugar, and a bit of raisin
This smells like lonely nights in a familiar place to me - very warm and cozy but with an undercurrent of melancholy.
Notes: passionfruit, orange blossom, guava, strawberry yuzu lemonade, and a dash of coconut cream over a rosewood base.
An extra fruity, innocent scent to cover for your sins. This is one of my favorite blends that came about quite by accident. It is a long lasting, radiant, and realistic tropical fruit salad. It is sweet without being cloying - innocent without being boring.
Sybarite is spicy, earthy, incense-y floral fragrance centered around the most beautiful natural red champaca absolute I could find. Despite it's rich, heavy notes, I formulated this fragrance to be somewhat diffusive and ethereal.
Notes: red champaca absolute, red mandarin, a deeply sexy vanilla, red musk, and a blend of natural sandalwoods
Sybarite: a person whose life is devoted to luxury and sensual pleasures. As a counterpart to the church inspired Duomo. Sybarite represents the other side of the coin. It is about turning inward, spoiling yourself, and engaging in the occasional sinful behavior.
Notes: Aged Vanilla Bean Tincture, Marigold Absolute, Amber, Blood Orange, Cocoa, Sugar, Cinnamon Leaf, Carnation
They said she would dab vanilla extract onto her wrists when she was cooking. Only ever wore her good perfume to church.
Maravilla is my most true vanilla scent. It primarily features a vanilla tincture that I started last year on November 1st - Dia de Los Muertos. Although we don't really celebrate in my family, many of us still put out pictures and buy a pot of marigolds this time of year.
Notes: lemongrass, basil, ginger, turmeric, osmanthus, sweetened toasted coconut, and sticky rice
It was my last summer working at the art museum and I was now interning as a collection photographer alongside the rest of the staff who were working on preserving, cleaning, and documenting pieces of east asian art from across China, Korea, and Japan. I spent dozens of hours every week with these pieces and across many of them, I would spot recurring themes and images, my favorite was the orange and black spotted koi.
Notes: Ice water, grand fir tips, jammy fir absolute, mossy river rocks, and a faint trail of some unknown wildflowers
Slightly masculine leaning and very fresh.
This is a special one to me, representing one of my favorite places. A slow bend in a snowmelt creek in rural Oregon. Swimming in the icy waters and camping in the evergreens surrounding it.
This blend contains in-house distilled grand fir oil - sustainably collected from ill-fated Christmas trees.
A single note mango iced tea fragrance...but it's about a cat.
Notes: black iced tea, mango syrup, brown sugar boba, a squeeze of lemon
Hear me out on this one. Mango is my cat. 15 years ago I had just come from my favorite tea shop, mango black tea in hand, when I met him. He was tiny - maybe 6 weeks old - and in pretty rough shape. He curled his orange and white self up in an oblong shape and fell asleep. I remember thinking - what a scruffy lil' mango.
Notes: Star jasmine , orange flower absolute, lavender, ambergris, clear lake water, ozone, chocolate, and a hint of coffee
A watery floral.
Walking along the shore of Lake Como towards the boat dock there is a cafe with a archway of star jasmine leading you towards the bar. A lavender salesman is across the road, reading a small novel and you wonder what it's about while you wait for the ferry to arrive.
This blend is vegan and contains an in-house aged coffee tincture in the alcohol based version. In the oil version, this has been replaced by coffee bean CO2 extract
Our photorealistic fruit single note, It’s Just Pears is getting a spicy autumnal chypre remix. The honey amber base is a bit richer on this version and overall the fragrance gives the impression of a spiced pear tarte tatin.
Notes: Bartlett pears, brandy, cinnamon, star anise, ginger, clove, caramel sauce, on a buttery chypre base.
The base of the original It's Just Pears... was already most of the way to a chypre base . We altered our formula to include additional resins, oakmoss, vetiver, ginger, star anise, cloves, and a dash of cinnamon for this fall themed version.
Notes: hinoki, cannabis terpenes, ocean mist, aldehydes, mimosa blossom, tonka bean, deer musk accord(vegan)
It was late May. We had gone hiking along the coast. Up in the woods where the ancient spruce and cypress trees cut up through the mist and seemed to stretch up forever. As the sun set, we headed back down to the car. You wanted to see the ocean.
A week later I found the flannel that you had been wearing that day. It still smelled like you. It would be many more weeks before the scent faded completely and months more before I realized you were never really mine to lose. I didn't love you. I loved what you represented.
Inspired by Dickens on the Strand - A celebration of Galveston’s victorian history, Charles Dickens, Edgar Allen Poe, and…pirates…for some reason. Specifically a night when I was celebrating at an after-hours event in full gibson girl getup and got to have an extended conversation with a very merry and very in-character Charles Dickens.
Notes: Hot mulled red wine, flavored with cranberries, warm spices, and orange zest; layered over a traditional chypre perfume base, pipe tobacco, and woods.
An enveloping atmospheric inspired by my personal favorite building - the Milan Duomo. This blend uses frankincense frereana essential oil, a CO2 extract of myrrh, rose absolute, cedarwood, and amyris in the traditional church incense accord. It is powdery, spicy, dusty, and the tiniest bit smoky.
Notes: burning wafts of church incense, labdanum, dusty ancient stone corridors, papyrus, and campari on your breath
The Milan Duomo was under construction from the mid 1300's to the mid 1900's. It is enormous and every square inch is crowded with detail. When I had the opportunity to see this building in person for the first time, it felt like an enormous celebration to me. A bucket list item crossed off that I never dreamed possible. Before climbing the never ending stone staircases to the top of the roof, we toasted our good fortune at the Campari bar next door. I could still smell the Campari on your breath when you leaned over the marble wall and whispered "wow."
A fruity, sweet aquatic. Violet cotton candy melted into a clean but still funky sea brine brightened with tart fruits and cedar leaf. This fragrance is a fantasy impression of colorful rock-pool dwelling creatures.
Notes: violet cotton candy, green apple, black currant, pineapple, sea brine, seaweed, red cedar leaf, and haitian vetiver.
I'm leading a group of friends down a steep rocky path near Cape Perpetua, but my feet are dancing over the rocks so fast I feel like I'm flying through the sea spray - running from them. At the bottom of the dropoff the black rocks jut out into the water. Dotting the landscape are tiny tidepools. Like a fantastic natural aquarium we sit in silence, watching the sea anemones wave back at us.
Notes: Fizzy grapefruit soda, freshly picked daisies, tiny forget-me-nots, and the powdery sweet down feathers of a well groomed parakeet
This perfume was inspired by rose-tinted memories of my first pet. Skye was a beautiful and very tame blue and white parakeet. Some of my earliest memories were of sneaking out of bed at sunrise and taking him out of his cage to play when the house and the world were just for the two of us.
It opens with a super carbonated and defined grapefruit soda. As it dries down the flowers and feathers will begin to come out.
This perfume is naturally colored with blue chamomile. Therefore the color of this fragrance may change slightly with age.
Notes: White Sage, Coriander, Clove, Sweet Dry Grasses, Tobacco Flower, Creosote, Leather, Patchouli, Vetiver, Amber, Natural Cambodian Oud
Mid-morning in late September we were riding out to take a look at your mother’s land. It had rained late night and the warming air was heavy and aromatic. The ground was covered in a mix of damp dried grasses, sage brush, and cactus.
The horse you had lent me was a young and calmly rebellious palomino. He shifted his weight slowly onto a hoof he had placed on my right boot. Was he testing me?
